An Introduction to Hydrogen
Last Updated:  06/17/2008 03:58:14 AM

Hydrogen as Fuel

According to the US Department of Energy, Hydrogen (H2) will play an important role in developing sustainable transportation in the United States. It is the simplest and lightest fuel. Hydrogen, in the future, may be produced in virtually unlimited quantities using renewable resources.

Hydrogen has been used effectively in a number of internal combustion engine vehicles as pure hydrogen mixed with natural gas.

In addition, hydrogen is used in a growing number of fuel cell vehicles. Hydrogen and oxygen fed into a proton exchange membrane (PEM) fuel cell "stack" produce enough electricity to power an electric automobile.  It powers the automobile without producing  air pollutants and few greenhouse gases.
